Why life is nothing more than a game of spades

Life is like a game of spades, everyone is not dealt the same hand nor is it guaranteed to be good. Be that as it may, an exceptional spades player is not determined solely on the results of the game or their hand. Don’t be that spectator who arrives mid-game and makes assertions about the quality of a team/player solely based on the score. The score in a spades game, like life, doesn’t tell the whole story. In order to assess the skills of a player you must evaluate the entire situation. For example, does the player bid correctly, read his partner well, and keep track of what has already been played. When transferring this assessment to life, we must look past the results and our accolades and hone in on the journey traveled.

What we have done, doesn’t automatically qualify us for what will be.

Living in our accomplishments creates a false sense of entitlement and restricts our maturation. What we have done, doesn’t automatically qualify us for what will be. We must be continuously learning; if we depend upon what we know, we are almost guaranteed to fail. An expert is not based on prior success in a field or formal documentation that certifies mastery in a specific area. An expert is a person who has comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of or skill in a particular area. Authoritative means, the ability to be trusted as accurate or true. How can your skill or knowledge be trusted, if you only reminisce about all the great things you’ve done? In life it is all about what you have done lately. If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse because you don’t stay the same.

You are far greater than any accolade, résumé, or award will ever give you credit for.

Your accomplishments do not define who you are or who you will become. You are far greater than any accolade, résumé, or award will ever give you credit for. An accomplishment is defined as an activity that a person can do well, typically as a result of study or practice. Nevertheless, accomplishments are in the eyes of the beholder. If you set a goal, work hard, and achieve it, be proud of what you’ve done and don’t let anyone belittle your success. While some accomplishments come easier to some than others, the focus should be placed on setting and achieving goals as every accomplishment is not achieved in the same fashion.

Next time you look in the mirror ask yourself, “Am I playing my hand to its fullest potential?”
